Gov. Ted Kulongoski and Salem Mayor Janet Taylor will open the valve today for a new biodiesel facility in Salem.

The facility, SeQuential-Pacific Biodiesel, is a joint venture between Oregon-based SeQuential Biofuels LLC and Hawaii-based Pacific Biodiesel Inc.

Kulongoski, Taylor and other guests will meet at the Old Pringle Schoolhouse, 4985 Battle Creek Road SE, at 10:30 a.m. for a briefing on biodiesel followed by a ride on a biodiesel-powered bus to the production facility.

SeQuential-Pacific Biodiesel recently announced the development of a biodiesel production facility in Portland, scheduled for completion this fall. That facility is expected to generate 1 million to 4 million gallons per year.

The Salem facility will accelerate SeQuential-Pacific's Oregon production by six to eight months before the Portland plant is completed.

Demand for biodiesel has increased in Oregon during the past three years.

Customers include the state Department of Administrative Services motor pool in Salem, which provides b20 -- a blend of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petro-diesel -- to the Transportation Department's Salem fleet.

The cities of Portland, Eugene and Corvallis also use b20 to power their diesel fleets.

Biodiesel blends are available at pump locations throughout Oregon.

The Salem biodiesel production facility is capable of producing as much as 1 million gallons per year of biodiesel from used cooking oil from Oregon restaurants and food processors, such as Kettle Foods.
