New House Truck 4
This, the fourth in the series of posts about John Labovitz's house truck build, comes a little closer to home than the others. It seems John has been on a short road trip which brought him in contact with my sister at an RV campground in Northern California. Never being shy, my sister walked right up to his rig and announced that as a house truck owner, he needed to come visit this site. Of course, John was already aware of the Bus Barn, and told her so (I have yet to call Pat and find out what she thinks now that she has confirmation that her brother is famous, at least online).
As John would be passing though my community in two days, he sent an email message, and we arranged for him to overnight here before continuing to the Valley.
In all, we had a wonderful 24 hour visit, each displaying and appreciating each other's house trucks (and bus), and sharing some very parallel thought patterns on a variety of topics. We drank red wine and exquisite home-roasted Sumatran coffee, and finished off a small jar of Vegemite at breakfast.
John's diesel Isuzu truck hums like a sewing machine and appears to drive like a compact car (I was envious, driving heavy vehicles is no fun after a while). The home space on the back is tidy and inviting. John has put a lot of thought into the living area even before construction, and has used premium materials throughout. The "Mollycroft" style roof line is classic and very distinctive on this truck.
Like any proper project, the design and implementation is evolving, changing in response to shifting values and perceptions that get molded and shaped by actually living in the space. Small things come out or fall away according to daily need, and few of those details are ever imagined accurately in the planning phase.
We parted late in the afternoon each glad for the other's company. John was headed to meet a friend in Eugene, but was first going to stop by Roger Beck's for more truck and bus immersion therapy. I hope he'll pass this way again soon.
